Fitting Knotted Structures in Tight Spaces
In this talk, we study how circles can be embedded in 3-space under spatial constraints. This question arises naturally in settings such as DNA packing and nanopore translocation. To show that certain entanglements cannot fit into a small space, we examine knot and link invariants such as width and trunk. These quantities measure complexity by counting intersections with level planes. I will discuss techniques for computing width-related quantities by analyzing essential surfaces that wrap around the knot in interesting ways.
